Sudbury -The state police bomb squad was called by Sudbury Police over the weekend after a World War II-era artillery shell was brought to the station.
The shell was dropped off at the police station Saturday after Framingham resident Phyllis Timnins included it in several items she took to Scott Anderson of Quikdrop in Sudbury to sell on eBay.
After Anderson investigated the shell, which had been wrapped in a paper bag, he took it to the police station where it was held until the bomb squad could safely dispose of it, according to the police log.
"We see all sorts of weird and strange things walk through the front door, and every time I think it can’t get any stranger something else comes in," Anderson said of the incident.
Timnins’ father had served on a Navy gunnery crew during World War II and kept the item as a souvenir when he was discharged in 1945. The 3-inch diameter shell was a live round with the delay screw still attached.
"He acted in the appropriate manner to ensure his safety and those in his store," Lt. Scott Nix said about Anderson’s actions. "This was something that had been sitting around a while, so it was likely very stable, but you never know."
Framingham Police were contacted and spoke to Timnins about the incident. No charges have been made.
