Thousands seen out in Davis Square for ArtBeat this weekend

Fri Jul 20, 2007, 06:32 PM EDT

Somerville -

Renamed ArtBeast for this year, ArtBeat in Davis Square Friday and Saturday didn't disappoint.

At least for the 11,000 - 12,000 estimated art lovers out and about.

Taking up the "beast" theme, the thousands who came through Davis Square on Friday night and Saturday had their choice of dance, music, art for sale and maybe just a little politics.

Even Mayor Joe Curtatone was out just having fun. However, no amount of coaxing could get him into an animal cage, where one of the artists was taping interviews with people in cages, on display.

Among the other events were two stages with live music, dance on rope ladders, a performance by the youth group the Sunsetters, and dozens of vendors selling everything from $150 stone-and-silver necklaces to $5 paintings dubbed "affordable art."
