If you’re a female reporter at a free comic book giveaway, you’re going to get compared to Lois Lane.
Last Saturday, Kevin Church, at the urging of his girlfriend, had 14 long boxes of comic books sitting outside his Davis Square home free for the taking. Church said around 250 books fit in a long box, so that was around 3,500 comic books he was giving away.
By 10:20 a.m. – the giveaway started at 10 – one-third of the comics were gone. Happy collectors left with anything from just a few volumes to boxes of comics.
Although Church did minimal advertising for the event – mostly posters at local comic book store Comicazi and a few online postings – word spread through the comic community.
“I got an e-mail from a friend of mine who doesn’t read comics and she was really excited about it,” said Casey Malone, a friend of Church’s who came to get reading material for himself and friends.
Along with clearing out space in his apartment, Church said it was nice to bring many of the people he sees in local comic book stores together.
“There are a lot of people here I’ve seen at the local comic shop,” he said. “It’s building a sense of community.”
It is also saving local collectors a lot of money. Most comic books go for $2.95, said Reggie Zimmerman, who’s been collecting for 20 years. When he began his collection, he said, a book cost 75 cents.
“Luckily, I’ve grown up and gotten my own job, so I can still afford them,” he said.
Although he gave away 14 boxes, Church said he was still keeping five from the “Silver Age” of comics, 1958 to 1970. He needs those, he said, for research for his comic blog, www.beaucoupkevin.com.
Along with reading, and giving away, comics, Church creates his own. He’s the creator and co-writer of “The Rack,” which can be seen at www.agreeablecomics.com.
