Jazzing it up in Salem

Fri Apr 20, 2007, 04:21 PM EDT

Salem -
Forget about the absurdly cold temperatures outside in these dire days of global warming. Think positive. Think Gore-warm. Think summer, when, optimists predict, the snow may finally be gone. Think about the first-ever Salem Jazz and Soul Festival, which will talk place Aug. 18 at the Willows.

Too much for you? We understand. Here’s a diversion. Think about R&B wildman Barrence Whitfield headlining a show that will showcase local aces like Eric Reardon, The Boston Horns and Los Sugar Kings — and support the aforementioned festival. How cool is that?

The concert and dance, set for April 21 at Knights of Columbus Hall, 94 Washington Square, Salem, is a fundraiser for the jazz fest. There will be prizes offered for guests, several auctions for many Salem-based products and attractions, and delicious food served from several of Salem's finest restaurants.

Later on, when it is warmer, there will be a series of mini-concerts in downtown Salem during the summer months leading up to festival weekend.

Tickets are $10 and are available at www.salemjazzsoul.com or at In a Pig's Eye Restaurant, 148 Derby St. in Salem, or at the door. To help out, call 978-744-8258 or e-mail info@salemjazzsoul.com.
