After a major renovation project that’s been more than 10 years in the making, officials for the Leominster Public Library are hoping to reopen their West Street doors this summer.
“It’s new construction and the renovation of an historic building,” Susan Chalifoux said. The original library is a 1910 Carnegie building. “That portion was completely renovated — there’s a whole new electrical system, air conditioning where there wasn’t any, a skylight — there’ll be some nice natural light.”
Most of the project was paid for by grants and city money, but the building committee, upon which Chalifoux sits, set a goal to privately raise $1.2 million. To that end, a gala auction will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m., Saturday, March 24 in the Tata Auditorium at Leominster City Hall, 25 West St., Leominster. Tickets are $25 and are available at the library or via committee members.
Donations will be accepted through March 16. For more details, call 978-534-7522 or visit the library’s Web site, www.leominsterlibary.org, and follow the link for the auction. Sponsors are still needed as well.
There will be both a silent and a live auction, Chalifoux, who is also the auction’s chairwoman, said.
“We’ve got all kinds of things,” she said. “There are several vacation homes. There’s sports memorabilia — Curt Shilling signed a ball and pictures and we have a David Ortiz bat. We’ve got Red Sox tickets and front row Celtics tickets.”
The Celtics tickets are for a game against the Miami Heat, giving the winner the chance to see both basketball great Shaquille O’Neal and former Celtics forward Antoine Walker.
Boston Globe sports writer Gordon Edes has agreed to donate a package which would include two box seats to a Red Sox game, early admission to the park to watch early batting practice and a tour of the Green Monster.
Several of the items have a local flavor, Chalifoux said. Mount Wachusett donated a private room, along with 10 lift tickets and 10 equipment-rental packages. Leominster High School students are constructing and donating an Adirondack chair. Coaches from the school are contributing a package of season tickets to all of next year’s sporting events.
“We’ve been going out to authors and asking for signed books and we’ve been getting lots of signed books,” Chalifoux said. “Ruth McCarty, who is a mystery writer living in Leominster, is putting together a basket of mystery books.”
There are also golfing packages, museum package, legal services and Spanish lessons. And if you’re lucky, you may win an original pink flamingo, signed by Don Featherstone. Featherstone, a Leominster resident, designed the bright lawn ornament in 1957.
The project has been a lengthy process, Chalifoux said, and required the committee to forecast library use over the next 20 years.
“It took a lot of time and a lot of planning,” Chalifoux said.
During the year-long renovation, the library has been temporarily relocated to Crossroads Office Park, 690 Mechanic St.
The proceeds from the auction will be used to fund new furniture, fixtures and equipment, new shelving and technology.
