Marlborough -

John Noble has been named the 2007 recipient of the Marlborough Heritage Hero award, the first to receive this honor to be given out at the 12th Annual Marlborough Heritage Festival scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 30, in downtown Marlborough.

“He's a wonderful person.” said Marlborough Mayor Nancy Stevens as she announced the name Sept. 17 in the Mayor's Conference Room in City Hall.

A former Main Street businessman, Noble has an extensive collection of historical items. He is a member of the Marlborough Rotary Club and has been named a Paul Harris Fellow and a Distinguished Citizen by the service organization. In 2006, he along with his wife Claire were chosen to be Grand Marshalls of the city's Labor Day Parade.

The Festival is a joint effort by the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce and the City of Marlborough to provide a day of fun for the entire family while celebrating the city's rich heritage and promoting downtown Marlborough as an enjoyable place to shop. Chairman Janet Bruno said the event will be held rain or shine.

“We will use the parking decks if it rains,” explained Elizabeth Gowaski, a member of the Festival committee.

During the Festival, Main Street will be lined with booths and tables featuring hand-made crafts, antiques and jewelry. Holiday decorations and gifts of all kinds will be among the more popular items for sale.

The Marlboro Lions Club will offer free and confidential eye, vision and hearing screening on Main Street in the Lions Eyemobile, a state of the art vision-screening center. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, a unique clinic on wheels, will be set up for the event.

A food court will offer hot dogs, hamburgers, fried dough, ice cream, drinks and more. In addition, baked goods and other items will be among the mix of offerings available during the festival.

One of the event's most popular attractions, the Chowderfest, will return again this year. For the price of $3 per person or $5 per family, attendees will be able to sample tasty chowder from area restaurants who will be competing to be named the best in Marlborough. (See story on page 13.)

The Marlborough Historical Society's booth at the 12th Annual Marlborough Heritage Festival will have books, note cards and the new 2008 calendar for sale.

The GFWC Marlborough Junior Woman's Club will have a booth featuring items appropriate for soldiers overseas, such as Coolties, polymer-filled scarves which lower body temperature by 1-4 degrees, for a donation of $3. For each one purchased, another will be donated. In addition, bring change for "Quarters for Quarters", which will raise funds to build homes for veterans, as well as to help construct Fisher House, a home-away-from-home for families of veterans who are hospitalized.

Earn a chance to win a gift certificate to a variety of local businesses. Fill out a free raffle ticket at the Marlborough Area Newcomers and Neighbors table at the Heritage Fair. The winner will be announced during MANN's Monday, Oct. 15, “Child Safety” general meeting. The winner must be present at the meeting to claim the gift certificate.

During the Harvest Festival, Main Street in downtown Marlborough will be closed to traffic from Florence Street to Bolton Street (Rte. 85). Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic in order to allow vendors, street entertainers and hundreds of attendees to enjoy the community-wide celebration.
