Schools across the state are purchasing and serving fresh, locally grown food to students in celebration of Massachusetts Harvest for Students Week, Sept. 24-30. During the week, schools are highlighting locally grown foods on their menus, and supporting the local economy by purchasing food directly from Massachusetts farms.

Officials to interview School Committee applicants

The Board of Selectmen and School Committee will meet in a Joint Convention to conduct interviews for the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Ruth Kaplan on Tuesday, Oct. 2, approximately 6 p.m., in the auditorium at the Old Lincoln School, 194 Boylston St. The vote will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

District looks to copy Heath School success

Jack Naggar of Brookline received the Professional Contribution Award from Boston University Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at its annual Senior Awards Reception on May 18. Professional Contribution Awards recognize seniors who demonstrate superior potential professionally through scholarship, research, clinical experience and promotion of one’s program to the community.

Literature provides an avenue for parents to hold onto the state of awe and appreciation of the changes our children are undergoing. Reading the works of authors who astutely capture the many faces of adolescent transformation helps to nurture our understanding and compassion for our children’s experiences.

So here are some suggestions of some great, some fun books for parents of teens that will take you inside the adolescent experience for your summer reading list. Many of these suggestions are offered to you by the staff at Brookline High School:

Phoebe Cherenfant of Brookline received the Wilma Walker Honor Award from the University of Chicago. The award goes to a student who has demonstrated outstanding work in the first year, and shows promise of future achievement in social work.

Leaving Lincoln: Retiring teachers bid farewell to 'warm and loving' school

Five Lincoln School teachers are retiring this spring after shepherding the school down Route 9 from its old home more than a decade ago. The Lincoln teachers are among 29 teachers retiring from the Brookline schools this year, many of them leaving classrooms they have taught in for decades.

Governor taps Kaplan for state Ed. Board

Gov. Deval Patrick named Brookline School Committee member Ruth Kaplan, a vocal opponent of the state’s MCAS-passage graduation requirement, to the state Board of Education, and amplified his criticism that the MCAS exam doesn’t accurately gauge a comprehensive education.

De-emphasis of MCAS touted, with one key dissent

Schools toast 240 years of combined experience
