A man and woman were arrested July 28 for reportedly stealing $317 in merchandise from Wal-Mart to support a drug habit.
Following the arrest, the two suspects were also charged with possession of a class C drug, Xanax.
Matthew Gayle, 24, of 148 Metzler Road, East Bridgewater, reportedly drove the getaway car while 21-year-old Kristy Lee Kenny, of 11 Calvin Road, North Easton, attempted to hide merchandise in her purse and sneak out the front exit.
“The officers received information that the female subject was inside struggling with Wal-Mart security people,” said deputy chief Chris Cutter.
“As the officer arrived he noticed that there was a grey Ford Taurus exiting the western exit onto Brockton Avenue. An employee pointed to the vehicle and said, ‘that’s them.’”
Detective Richard Gambino activated the lights and siren on his cruiser, Cutter said, and the suspect’s Taurus pulled out of the parking lot.
“The vehicle accelerated away from him at a high speed,” he said. “It quickly turned west onto Wilber Street. The operator almost lost control of his vehicle while making that turn because of the speed.
Wilber Street is a dead end street. They came to the end of the road (and) stopped their car. The officer was able to apprehend both of them.”
“They were picking up merchandise and removing the wrapping and security devices while in the store and they were placing it inside Kenny’s pocketbook,” Cutter said.
“She put up a little struggle. It is reported she kicked the personnel and took off running out to her vehicle and that’s when the officers were arriving. When they towed the motor vehicle they found eight pills of Xanax and two half pills.
After speaking with the two suspects it was determined that they were stealing to support their drug habit.”
