Abington, Mass. -A 49-year-old Boston man is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (his car), negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of personal injury after an alleged hit and run incident Sunday in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
Robert L. Cobb, of 24 Hanson St., Boston, reportedly hit the car of a 29-year old female while she was waiting for an open parking space, according to Abington Deputy Chief Chris Cutter.
After allegedly fighting with her for the spot she was waiting for, he pulled into another space several feet away, where he stayed until he was arrested.
“She was waiting for another car to back out of the space so she could pull in,” Cutter said. “Mr. Cobb went up behind her and started beeping at her even though it appeared there was enough room for him to go around her. Mr. Cobb continued to beep his horn and the victim stayed in her car waiting.
He backed his car up several feet and quickly excelled and smashed the front end of his vehicle to the end of her vehicle. He just got so enraged he decided to rear-end this girl as she was waiting to pull in.”
The car the victim was waiting for exited the space at this point, Cutter said, and the victim attempted to pull into the spot.
“This guy drives around her and tries to take the space from her, she pulled in and he took off from the area. But he was observed by witnesses pulling into a space further away in the parking lot. He remained in his car in that space until police arrived.”
After a brief investigation he was put under arrest. He had a passenger in his car, but the passenger was not arrested.
“Officers asked him if he was involved in an accident and his response was ‘I guess so, if you want to call it one,’” Cutter said. “And then he used some swear words and said ‘the girl wouldn’t move her car’ with some expletives thrown in.”
Abington police are filing paperwork to apply for an “immediate threat” hearing with the Registry of Motor vehicles to see if he’s a threat to other drivers, Cutter said. There was minor damage to the rear end and front end of both vehicles, he said.
